Pressing the red 'X' button should keep the app open in the dock and only close the window. To quit the application entirely, right-click its icon in the Dock and select 'Quit,' or navigate to the first menu to the right of the Apple menu (named after the application) and select 'Quit' (or use the shortcut CMD+Q).

Strongly agree with this. Clicking the red “close” button should hide the app, or close it. When I switch back to the app again it should be in the exact same state as I left it. Same thread, same position.
Messaging and notes apps on Mac (iMessage, WhatsApp, the built in Notes app) all work like this. It makes jumping in and out of the app much smoother.
