Navigating long messages within a chat thread can be cumbersome, especially when trying to locate specific previous messages. To improve this experience, I propose adding quick-jump controls—specifically, up and down buttons—that allow users to jump directly to the top of the previous or next message. These buttons can be minimally intrusive, integrated into the settings/function bar that sits above the typing box. Additionally, when at the bottom of a chat thread, pressing the up button should jump to the top of the most recent message if it is not currently visible on the screen. For enhanced efficiency, this functionality should also be accessible via keyboard shortcuts, such as Ctrl + ↑ to jump to the previous message and Ctrl + ↓ to jump to the next message. This combination of visual buttons and keyboard shortcuts will streamline navigation, especially in lengthy conversations, without excessive scrolling. Common use cases include reviewing previous instructions in lengthy messages, quickly navigating between multiple replies, and referencing older parts of a conversation without losing one’s place. Overall, these improvements will significantly enhance the usability and efficiency of navigating chat threads.
